Rocks, Minerals, and Erosion

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary Rocks are formed bit by bit. Grains of dirt, sand and rock are washed into a large body of water where they settle to the bottom

Sedimentary Simulation - This is an activity students can do in class or at home.  They have an opportunity to make predictions and explain the results.

Sediments are Everywhere Classroom activity. Using a simple dusting activity, students complete the answers to the worksheet to understand more about sediment.

The Role of Minerals in Fossil Formation - A sponge covered with a solution of plaster of paris is used to demonstrate one way fossils are formed.

The Fossil Fomration Process - The tracks of a toy are used to simulate the preservation of animal evidence in soft sediments such as mud.

Introduction to Telling Geologic Time - By observing the pattern of layers settling on top of others, students gain an understanding of relative dating and processes that inform our understanding of the geologic timetable.

Virtual Cave

Split Twig Figurines - Split twig figurines represent the oldest record of human occupancy of the Grand Canyon, some dating back over 4,000 years.
