Nova Scotia - Our Province

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is a province of Canada. Nova Scotia means "New Scotland." It is made of a peninsula and Cape Breton Island. Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia but Halifax and Dartmouth are known as the "twin cities."
Nova Scotia is called a maritime province because it is by the sea. The provincial flower is the Mayflower.
Fishing, farming and forestry are important industries in Nova Scotia. Some of the main catches for the fisherman are cod, haddock, herring, pollock and lobster. Many of the trees of Nova Scotia are used to make lumber, paper and cardboard. Some are sold for Christmas trees each year. There are dairy, apple and strawberry farms in Nova Scotia to name a few.
Nova Scotia also has mines. Natural gas and oil are becoming very important.
Nova Scotia's flag is blue and white. It has the blue cross of St. Andrew on a white background. The coat of arms of Nova Scotia has a crest in the center with the blue cross of St. Andrew and the symbol of Scotland.
